How to Price Your eBay Items Like a Pro Without Guessing

Not sure what to charge on eBay? Start with what buyers actually paid — not what other sellers are asking.

Not sure what to charge on eBay? Start with what buyers actually paid — not what other sellers are asking.

Search for almost any product on eBay and you'll find prices all over the place. $25. $40. $60. Maybe someone is asking $100.

That doesn't mean your item is worth any of those numbers.

Active listings show you what sellers want. Sold listings show you what buyers actually paid.

That's where your price should start.

If you're not even sure your item has resale value yet, start with is your old stuff worth anything? and come back once you know what you're holding.

Start With Sold Listings

Search eBay for the same item you're selling, or the closest thing to it. Then look at the ones that actually sold.

Pay attention to:

  • brand and model
  • size or variation
  • condition
  • what's included
  • how recently it sold

One sale doesn't tell you much. Several comparable sales from the last few weeks give you a real picture of the market — far more than a page of active listings with hopeful asking prices.

Don't Let One Strange Sale Set Your Price

Sold prices have outliers too.

If most comparable items sold around $30–$40, but one went for $15 and another for $75, don't reach for the highest number. Look for the range where several genuinely similar items changed hands.

Then adjust for the item you actually have:

  • better or worse condition
  • missing pieces
  • original box and accessories
  • a more desirable variation
  • how complete it is

Start with the market, then adjust for the item in your hands.

Sale Price Is Not Profit

A $35 sale doesn't mean $35 in your pocket.

Before you settle on a price, subtract:

  • eBay fees
  • shipping
  • packaging
  • what you paid for the item, if anything

Fees and shipping change over time and vary by country, so check the current numbers for your marketplace instead of trusting an old figure. The question to ask is simple: after my costs, is selling at this price still worth it?

You Choose the Price. Zetlis Builds the Listing.

Once you know what you want to charge, you still have to create the listing. Photos. Title. Keywords. Description. Category. Item specifics.

That's the repetitive part, and it's where Zetlis helps. Upload your photos and Zetlis analyzes the item and builds the eBay listing for you — title options, keywords, description, category and item details.

You review everything, enter the price you've decided on, and publish straight to your own eBay account.

Spend your time deciding what the item is worth — not typing the listing.

What If There Aren't Enough Sold Listings?

For older, niche or rare items, the exact product may have few or no recent sales. Broaden the comparison:

  • similar models from the same brand
  • other pieces from the same collection
  • comparable replacement parts
  • related versions of the same product

If you're still unsure, you can start a little higher and leave room to accept offers.

Don't Price Based on What You Paid

Paying $80 for something three years ago doesn't mean the market will give you $80, $60 or even $40 today. And something that was cheap when you bought it may be worth more now.

Today's market sets today's price.

A Simple Pricing Rule

1. Find comparable sold listings.

2. Ignore the obvious outliers.

3. Adjust for condition and what's included.

4. Account for fees, shipping and your costs.

5. Pick a price that still makes the sale worthwhile.

Don't price your item based on the highest listing you can find. Don't guess. Look at what buyers have actually paid.

The best starting price isn't what another seller hopes to get. It's what the market has already shown people are willing to pay.
